Segun Sowunmi Hints at Possible PDP Exit, May Back Tinubu in 2027
A major shake-up may be on the horizon in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Segun Sowunmi, a prominent party chieftain, has suggested he might dump the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Prime Time on Arise TV, the former PDP governorship aspirant in Ogun State hinted at joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if he decides to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“If I choose to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027, I will leave the PDP and join his party — it’s a real possibility,” Sowunmi said.
“I’ve been in the PDP for 28 years. Some people haven’t lasted 28 days. If I leave, it’ll be open and dignified.”

Sowunmi, who served as a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, criticised the PDP for ignoring repeated calls for internal reform.
“Why stay in a party that refuses to fix itself despite all the warnings?” he asked.
Pressed further on his potential exit, Sowunmi pointed to local political dynamics and the expectations of his constituents.
“Looking at what’s happening in my state, among my people and in my tribe — the chances are very, very strong,” he added.
