Post-Fire Rebirth: Kano Gov Unveils N2 Billion Revamp Plan for GSM Market
In a bold recovery effort following a recent fire outbreak, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has pledged over ₦2 billion to rebuild and modernise the Farm Centre GSM Market, one of the state’s largest tech and mobile phone trading hubs.
The governor announced during a visit to the market, which was recently gutted by flames, displacing thousands of traders and damaging property worth millions.
Governor Yusuf revealed that the planned intervention is not just about rebuilding what was lost—but transforming the market into a world-class commercial hub with regional reach.
A Vision for Modernisation and Safety
The redevelopment plan includes:
-
Reconstruction of damaged structures
-
Expansion of market territory via land acquisition
-
Construction of a fully equipped fire station within the market
-
Installation of solar-powered streetlights for improved visibility and security
-
A pedestrian bridge to ease access and protect foot traffic
-
New drainage channels to address flooding risks
-
Rehabilitation of internal and access roads
Governor Yusuf also revealed plans for a dedicated management board to oversee market operations, ensuring accountability, sustainability, and better service delivery.

Boosting Trade, Security, and Regional Integration
The governor emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to make the Farm Centre GSM Market a regional trade powerhouse, capable of attracting customers and investors from neighbouring countries and strengthening cross-border commerce.
He also called on market traders and users to work hand-in-hand with security agencies to address increasing concerns over phone snatching and petty crimes, which have plagued the area in recent months.
“This market is a lifeline for thousands of our youths. It’s not just about gadgets; it’s about livelihoods,” Yusuf said. “Our mission is to restore hope, empower our people, and raise a centre of excellence that reflects Kano’s status as a commercial giant.”
Traders React with Gratitude
Speaking on behalf of the traders, Jamilu Gama, chairman of the GSM Market Association, described the government’s plan as “a timely and lifesaving intervention.” He praised the governor for responding swiftly and boldly to the crisis.
