CAF to Unveil New WAFCON Trophy July 2, Doubles Prize Money for 2025 Tournament
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that a new trophy for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will be unveiled on July 2, 2025, just days before the kickoff of this year’s continental showdown in Morocco.
The redesigned TotalEnergies WAFCON trophy will be revealed via CAF’s digital platforms, with a special ceremony planned in partnership with the tournament’s title sponsor, TotalEnergies. The unveiling underscores CAF’s renewed commitment to raising the profile of women’s football across Africa.

This year’s tournament, initially scheduled for 2024 but postponed, is set to run from July 5 to 26, with Morocco as host nation. The opening match will feature the Moroccan women’s team squaring off against Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
In a major boost for the women’s game, CAF has also announced a substantial increase in prize money for the 2025 edition. The winning team will now take home $2.4 million — more than double the previous $975,000 awarded in 2022.

Twelve national teams will vie for the coveted title and a chance to qualify for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup. Group A comprises hosts Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Nigeria’s Super Falcons, the tournament’s most decorated team with 11 titles, headline Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. Group C features defending champions South Africa, as well as Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe has described the revamp — from the new trophy to increased financial incentives — as part of broader efforts to strengthen and professionalise women’s football on the continent.
The tournament promises not only fierce competition and national pride but also a gateway to the global stage, as WAFCON serves as a qualifying tournament for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
More updates on match fixtures and coverage will follow as the countdown to Africa’s premier women’s football event begins.
