Peter Obi Backs ADC Coalition, Says Nigerians’ Welfare Will Be Top Priority in 2027
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has thrown his full weight behind the emerging political coalition rallying under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), pledging that the alliance will deliver compassionate and capable leadership for Nigerians come 2027.
In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, July 3, Obi lauded the coalition’s strategic decision to adopt the ADC as its unified political platform. He described the move as a necessary step towards restoring hope in Nigeria’s political future.

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections with Distinguished Senator David Mark serving as the National Chairman and H.E. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as the National Secretary,” Obi wrote.
He reaffirmed the coalition’s resolve to put the interests of Nigerians first:
“Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.”
Obi emphasised the need for broad-based unity among opposition parties to dismantle entrenched systems that perpetuate hardship and insecurity.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone,” he added. “To dismantle the structures that keep our people in poverty and insecurity, we must build bridges, not walls — even when those bridges are uneasy.”
The ADC-led coalition comprises a mix of prominent political figures, including Obi himself, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-governors, and seasoned lawmakers. The formal unveiling of the coalition took place on Wednesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
At the event, Senator David Mark was officially named interim National Chairman of the ADC, while former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was announced as interim National Secretary. The coalition’s leadership has made clear its intent to mount a robust challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
With rising public discontent over governance and growing calls for reform, the ADC coalition is positioning itself as a credible alternative that promises to place citizens’ welfare at the heart of national leadership.
