UEFA Unveils New Ballon d’Or Criteria Ahead of 2025 Ceremony
With the 2025 Ballon d’Or drawing closer, UEFA has introduced a revamped selection model aimed at making the prestigious football award more merit-based and transparent. This year’s ceremony, set for September 22 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, is shaping up to be a thrilling contest with no clear frontrunner in sight.
Under the new system, three main pillars will guide the selection process: outstanding individual performances, success at club and international levels, and a strong display of sportsmanship and fair play. According to L’Équipe, the changes were made in collaboration with the award’s organisers to shift the spotlight toward performance rather than legacy or name recognition.

With key tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League, Nations League, and the Club World Cup still underway, the race remains wide open. The performances of national teams from football powerhouses such as France, Spain, Portugal, and Germany in the Nations League are expected to significantly influence final decisions.
Rodri of Manchester City clinched the title last year, narrowly beating Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid, thanks to his instrumental role in City’s league victory and Spain’s international campaign. This year, however, players like Pedri, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and rising star Lamine Yamal may face setbacks due to limited participation in critical fixtures.

Kylian Mbappé remains in the spotlight despite a title-less debut season with Real Madrid. His pursuit of personal achievements, including the Golden Boot, and his involvement in high-profile games could still keep him in contention.
In a notable stride toward equality, UEFA also announced that every male award category will now have an equivalent category for women, underscoring its commitment to gender inclusivity in football’s top honours.
As the football season nears its climax, fans can expect one of the most competitive and unpredictable Ballon d’Or races in recent memory.
