Legacy of a Former Leader
Born December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari first ruled Nigeria as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023.
Buhari’s 2015 election victory was historic, marking the first time in Nigeria’s history that an incumbent president lost at the polls. Running under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Buhari defeated then-President Goodluck Jonathan, signalling a turning point in the country’s democratic evolution.

Before securing the presidency in 2015, Buhari had contested and lost elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011. He later won re-election in 2019, defeating former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by a wide margin.
Renowned for his hardline approach to anti-corruption and discipline in public service, Buhari remained a towering figure in Nigeria’s political landscape for decades, with influence spanning both military rule and democratic governance.
A retired major general, Buhari transitioned from military service to political leadership, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s Fourth Republic.
Final Farewell
The Buhari family, through Garba Shehu, confirmed the passing in an official statement. Details of the funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.
