Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, Dies at 91 — Hours After Buhari’s Passing
The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91, just hours after the death of his longtime friend and Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, was announced in London.
Sources within the Ijebu Palace confirmed that the respected monarch will be laid to rest by Islamic rites at the royal burial grounds, alongside his predecessors.

Oba Adetona’s passing comes barely two months after he marked his 91st birthday, which was widely celebrated and attended by prominent figures, including President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries, who hailed his immense contributions to the cultural and socio-economic development of Ogun State.
The news of his death was officially confirmed by Governor Dapo Abiodun through a statement shared on his verified social media platforms on Sunday.

Governor Abiodun described the late monarch as a towering figure who played a pivotal role in the state’s efforts to enhance tourism and preserve cultural heritage.
“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who departed this world on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. This tragic news, coming on the heels of the loss of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is a deep blow not only to Ogun State but to Nigeria as a whole,” the statement read.
Governor Abiodun praised the monarch’s remarkable reign, which began in 1960, noting his significant role in fostering unity, peace, and development across Ijebuland. Under his stewardship, the region witnessed tremendous strides in cultural preservation, education, infrastructure, and economic progress.
The governor also highlighted Oba Adetona’s instrumental efforts in elevating the Ojude Oba Festival to international prominence, describing it as a lasting part of his enduring legacy.
“We celebrate his lifetime of dedicated service and pray for his peaceful rest,” the statement concluded.
