The programme, scheduled for official launch on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, marks a major milestone under Lagos State’s broader Agriculture and Food Systems Strategy. It seeks to directly coordinate large-scale sourcing of agricultural produce, streamlining the movement of food from rural producers to urban consumers through a more efficient and transparent process.
According to government officials, “Produce for Lagos” is designed to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance price stability, and ensure steady access to affordable, fresh food for residents of the state.

“Feeding the Nation, one harvest at a time” is the guiding philosophy behind the initiative, reflecting Lagos’s commitment to connecting rural farmers with urban markets more sustainably.
At the heart of the programme is a focus on empowering local farmers through guaranteed off-take agreements, boosting incomes, reducing waste, and shielding consumers from the impacts of seasonal price fluctuations. The initiative will also leverage improved logistics systems to enhance efficiency within the food supply chain.
The launch event is expected to draw key stakeholders from across the agriculture, logistics, food processing, trade, policy, and development sectors, as well as farmer cooperatives and partners from across Nigeria.
Given Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s most populous and economically vibrant state, the “Produce for Lagos” programme is being touted as a potential model for transforming subnational food systems, demonstrating how targeted government interventions can promote efficiency, sustainability, and resilience in agricultural markets.
