In honour of his late predecessor, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University.
President Tinubu made the announcement on Monday during the Federal Executive Council’s (FEC) session of tributes held in memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

According to Tinubu, the decision to rename the university after Buhari is in recognition of the former president’s “unwavering commitment to the unity of Nigeria and his enduring contributions to national development, particularly in the North-East region.”
“It is only fitting that the University of Maiduguri, an institution that has stood resilient in the face of adversity and represents the spirit of the North-East, bears the name of a man who gave so much to this nation,” Tinubu said.

The University of Maiduguri, located in Borno State, has long been at the forefront of educational resilience in the face of insurgency in the region. The renaming is expected to serve as a lasting tribute to Buhari’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
The announcement comes as part of a series of national honours and tributes marking Buhari’s passing, including a national day of mourning and state burial in Daura, Katsina State.
More updates are expected as the Federal Government continues its programme of tributes and memorials.
