…Cites health concerns, amid reports of internal party discontent
Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has resigned as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a sudden end to his tenure less than a year after assuming the position.
Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State who took the reins of the ruling party in August 2023, reportedly submitted his resignation with immediate effect, citing health-related issues as his primary reason for stepping down.

Although his resignation letter pointed to the need to prioritise his well-being, party insiders suggest that rising internal dissatisfaction over his leadership may have influenced the decision. Reliable sources disclosed that Ganduje’s personal belongings were removed from his office at the APC national secretariat on Friday, reinforcing speculations of his exit.
During his short time as APC chairman, Ganduje struggled to gain the confidence of a broad spectrum of party stakeholders. His emergence had been controversial from the outset, with several party members questioning the transparency of the process that brought him into office.

Criticism of his tenure intensified in recent months, with accusations ranging from alleged favouritism to poor handling of party affairs. One of the flashpoints, according to multiple sources, was the imposition of steep nomination fees on aspirants contesting in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections—an action many described as exploitative and anti-democratic.
As at the time of filing this report, the APC has not issued an official confirmation of the resignation or announced any interim leadership arrangement.
Ganduje’s exit comes at a time when the party is preparing for key electoral contests, and his resignation is expected to trigger fresh discussions about the direction of the APC under new leadership.
