BREAKING: Nigerian Goalkeeping Legend Peter Rufai Dies at 61
Nigeria’s football community is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Peter Rufai, who passed away at the age of 61.
Popularly known as “Dodomayana”, Rufai reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, following a prolonged illness. His passing was confirmed by a senior official of the Lagos State Government, although an official statement from the family is still being awaited.

Rufai was a cornerstone of Nigeria’s golden football era. The legendary shot-stopper earned 65 international caps for the Super Eagles and represented the country at two FIFA World Cups — in 1994 and 1998.
He was also an integral part of the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, helping Nigeria clinch one of its most celebrated football titles.

Beyond his national team contributions, Rufai enjoyed a successful club career in both Nigeria and Europe and later became an influential mentor for young goalkeepers.
