Kano Gov Yusuf Set for Possible APC Switch as High-Level Political Talks Intensify
Fresh indications of a possible political shift have emerged in Kano State, with the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, reportedly being positioned for a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following consultations involving top political stakeholders and lawmakers.
The development followed a high-level meeting involving the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and key figures within the influential Kwankwasiyya political movement. The outcome of the meeting, according to sources familiar with the discussions, points to growing momentum behind Governor Yusuf’s potential defection to the ruling party.
The Director-General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano State Government House, Abdullahi Rogo, confirmed that deliberations held with members of the House of Assembly and leaders of the Kwankwasiyya bloc produced a consensus recommending that Governor Yusuf should align with the APC as part of broader political realignment efforts in the state.
Rogo disclosed that the talks were aimed at strengthening political cooperation, stabilising governance, and harmonising interests across major political platforms in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically strategic states.
Stakeholders Push for Governor’s Realignment
According to Rogo, the recommendation emerged after extensive consultations with lawmakers and influential political actors who believe that Governor Yusuf’s alignment with the APC could foster greater unity and open new avenues for collaboration at both state and national levels.
“After our engagement with the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly and other members of the Kwankwasiyya movement, there was a consensus that the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, should consider joining the APC,” Rogo said.
He explained that the discussions reflect a growing belief among stakeholders that closer alignment with the ruling party at the centre could enhance governance outcomes and political stability in Kano State.

Kwankwaso’s Influence Remains Central
While the focus of the consultations is said to be on Governor Yusuf, Rogo noted that the political stature and influence of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement and former governor of the state, remain central to any major political decision within the bloc.
According to him, discussions around Governor Yusuf’s potential defection were held with due consideration of Kwankwaso’s leadership role and longstanding influence in Kano politics.
Political observers note that any move by the governor would likely have significant implications for the Kwankwasiyya movement, given its historical dominance and grassroots following across the state.

No Timeline Yet, Awaiting Official Confirmation
Despite the reported consensus, no official date has been fixed for Governor Yusuf’s possible defection, and Rogo emphasised that consultations are still ongoing. He noted that the final decision rests with the governor and other principal actors involved.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Yusuf has not publicly commented on the matter, while Senator Kwankwaso has also remained silent. Their silence has continued to fuel political debate and speculation within Kano’s political circles.

Political Implications for Kano and Beyond
Analysts say that a defection by the sitting governor could significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape, alter party dynamics within the State House of Assembly, and influence future electoral contests.
Kano’s large voting population and political relevance make any major shift involving the governor a development of national interest. Observers believe that such a move could strengthen the APC’s position in the state while redefining opposition alignments.
For now, the situation remains fluid, with political actors and party supporters closely monitoring developments as consultations continue behind the scenes.
