Police Blame Father in Fatal Shooting of WAEC Student in Ibadan
The Oyo State Police Command has come under intense scrutiny following the tragic killing of 14-year-old Kehinde Alade, who was reportedly shot during a police chase in Ibadan on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
According to the Command, the incident began when Kehinde’s father, Mr Odunayo Alade, allegedly violated traffic rules by driving against traffic (one-way) along the Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road in Egbeda Local Government Area. Officers from a joint patrol of the Oyo State Police and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) attempted to stop the vehicle—a black Honda Accord with Lagos registration number FST 639 JJ—around 7:45 a.m., but the situation quickly escalated.

Instead of pulling over, the driver reportedly sped toward the officers, ramming into two OYTMA patrol vehicles and a police Buffalo truck. The police say they feared a possible abduction or other criminal activity, leading them to set up roadblocks and initiate a high-speed pursuit.
In the heat of the chase, a police corporal allegedly fired a shot intended for the vehicle’s tyres. Tragically, the bullet struck Kehinde, who was seated behind the driver. He was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was later taken to the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Adenola, has launched a full investigation into the incident. The officer responsible for the shooting has been arrested and is currently cooperating with the investigation, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
In a statement, the Police Command extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving Alade family and assured the public of a thorough and transparent inquiry. Updates are expected as investigations progress.
